Kangaroo Point Parklands

Third Year- Semester 1
When designing a space, we need to adapt to the needs of the community and the conditions of the weather. Both are always fluctuating; rising and falling. El Nino and La Nina are two major influences on how the weather acts at certain times of the year. By focusing on these serious weather impacts, Kangaroo Point can be an ever changing landscape that provides an educational understanding on how and when the weather changes through flora, fauna and technology.
Detailed Section of the Masterplan- The plan moves through a hot dry environment into a more topical environment to express different temperatures. The large blue and red circle is a sun dial that moves on to each colour during summer and winter when the direction of the sun changes.
Perspective 1- Using SketchUp, I created a walkway that is similar to the South Bank Grand Arbour and merges with it up along Kangaroo Point. They also act as pillars for the pathway to rise and fall during flooding, similar to the ferry platform designs.
Perspective 2- The Arbour weaves and bends through Kangaroo Point so people can enjoy and experience both the river and the cliff edge.
Perspective 3- The Arbour through a Sub-tropical environment create a cool, lush and protected environment from the sun where people can walk and not feel uncomfortable.
Perspective 4- This environment shows the transition from a Sub-tropical environment to a dry arid environment. In the distance there is the sun dial and a wind sculpture that will create a unique noise when passing through the space.
Perspective 5- This environment mimics the desert mirage where things become foggy and blurry when staring at the horizon. This installation also acts as a playground for kids to interact and enjoy the unusual space.
Perspective 6- A more elevated 3D view of the desert space shows how large the space is and how it interacts with the pathway and cliff face. It is a unique and unusual aspect to the space reflecting the colours of the Kangaroo Point Cliffs.
